Our Story

Nestled on the rugged Chalone Bench along historic Highway 146 near Pinnacles National Park, California 146 Extra-Virgin Olive Oil is the result of a shared passion for agriculture, family, friendship, and the land.

Our goal: extra-virgin olive oil that is produced from carefully selected California olives grown in the unique climate of the Chalone region, where warm days, cool nights, rocky soils, and steady winds help create oils with exceptional character and balance. As our young orchards continue to mature, we carefully source additional fruit from select estate-grown olive groves within Monterey County whenever possible. When additional fruit is needed, we extend our search to exceptional estate-grown olive groves throughout California, allowing us to maintain the highest quality standards for extra-virgin olive oil. Each harvest is milled on the day it is picked to preserve the freshness, flavor, and character that define exceptional extra-virgin olive oil.

Our new generation of olive trees is being established on the Chalone Bench, representing a long-term commitment to the future of California 146. These young orchards reflect our belief that great olive oil begins years before the first harvest, with careful stewardship of the land and a vision that extends beyond a single season.

The inspiration for California 146 comes from the vision of the late Pete Graff and the pioneering spirit of Richard Graff, whose role in the historic 1976 Paris Wine Tasting helped bring international recognition to California agriculture.

Today, Richard’s nephew, Rick Graff, and Brian Chavaria continue that tradition through a friendship that has spanned more than 40 years. Built on trust, shared experiences, and a mutual respect for the land, their partnership reflects a lifelong commitment to preserving the agricultural heritage of the Chalone region while creating something meaningful for future generations.

Each bottle reflects the spirit of the Chalone region — authentic, resilient, and deeply connected to the soil. From grove to bottle, our goal is simple: to honor the region, the people who shaped it, and the generations who will continue its story.
